also, have you read piranesi? i don't read much contemporary non-sci-fi fiction, but that's 1/2 of the good ones i came across last year - the other being notes on a scandal, which has a terrifying nanokovian unreliable narrator which would not be out of place in your more misanthropic oeuvre
