my favorite little fairy tale from the brother’s grimm since i was very little is this funny little one about a shepherd choosing which of three equally pretty1 sisters to marry. his mother very wisely tells him to bring the three girls a gift of cheese. we all know that you may fascinate a woman by giving her a piece of cheese but that is not the only reason she gives this advice. as he watches the three girls eat the cheese—i find it very charmingly premodern that they have no hesitations on instantly chowing down in front of him—he notices that they each deal with the rind differently. the eldest girl pares the rind off her cheese far too close and leaves too much of the dry bad edge cheese on bc she’s stingy, so he turns her down. & the next girl pares the rind off as fast as she can to get eatin, but she throws away a fair bit of good cheese, which is obviously unacceptable. but the youngest girl pares off the rind neatly & carefully, neither stingily eating the dry edge cheese nor carelessly throwing out good cheese, so the shepherd marries her.
the story is very specific on this point.
