One could argue that romcoms are literal propoganda. They give women a false pretens on which to seek out pleasure from men. AI waifus on the other hand are of the intent to please men.
imho it would depend on the level of ai - i.e. at some point if it would be believable as a sentient being - i might be very interested in having an ai friend in one way or another.
