This magic-via-pain philosophy totally reminds me of Magicians! Great show, highly recommend (though maybe after you finish your novel, if you don't want it to override/ influence some of your seeds & ideas).

I'm predicting the new wife will get pregnant, and also that the need for magic users to find a place to settle down without exploitation and persecution will be a recurring theme
